Some friendly words of advice...
Please
don t choose a driving instructor on lesson price alone. Have trial
lessons until you find an instructor you like. Your instructor
may suggest you book your test after just a few lessons. This is a way of
dissuading you from changing to someone else. Once you have your test
booked, you are unlikely to want to change. Don t agree to book a test
after a few lessons. One of the pet hates of driving examiners is a pupil
who goes to test before reaching the required standard. Make
sure your instructor is fully qualified and is displaying a green badge on
the tuition vehicle, not a pink badge. If the badge is pink,
your instructor is a trainee, just like you. I know that we all have to
learn, but make sure you are getting what you think you are paying
for. Please remember that companies who advertise daily on
local radio are paying a lot of money for this, which has to be covered by
your lesson fees. Like me, most established local instructors
won t normally need to advertise. Business is generated by personal
recommendations, the tuition vehicle itself and internet searches.
You should think about changing your instructor if...
Your instructor is habitually late or at times, doesn t turn up at all.
You know you are making mistakes, but your instructor doesn t say
anything or doesn t give you sufficient advice on how to correct the
error. You don t feel you are making sufficient progress. Your
instructor makes phone calls, not for your benefit, during your lesson.
Your instructor calls at home to make a sandwich, does the shopping, runs
errands, stops for breakfast or a cigarette, listens to a football match,
queues up at the post office or whatever. This list could be almost
endless, but I think you can work out what is appropriate and what isn t.
Obviously if you want to take a break at any time in your lesson that s
fine. Occasionally I will need fuel or a loo stop, so don t mark us down
for this. The last subject is a tricky one;
inappropriate behaviour...Your
instructor should never say or do anything to upset or intimidate you in
any way or make you feel unsafe, uneasy or embarrassed. Don t put yourself
through this. Drive or ask to be driven back to your home and tell someone
you trust why you are upset and change your instructor.

Drive On !

The
practical driving test is designed to see if you: can
drive safely in different road and traffic conditions know
the Highway Code and can show this through your driving ability. As
long as you show the standard required, you ll pass your driving test.
You must bring: Your
theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you re not exempt from taking
the theory test both
parts of your driving licence - the photo-card and the paper counterpart
What happens during the test Before
you start the driving ability part of your test, you ll have an eyesight
check and
be asked 2 vehicle safety questions.
Eyesight
check You ll
have to read a number plate from a distance of: 20
metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate 20.5
metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate You
can write down what you see if you can t speak English or have difficulty reading.
Vehicle safety questions: show me, tell me You ll
be asked 2 vehicle safety questions. These are also known as the show me, tell
me questions. The
examiner will ask you one show me question, where you ll have to show them
how you d carry out a vehicle safety check. You ll
also be asked one tell me question, where you ll have to explain to the examiner
how you d carry out the check. Find
all the questions below
The driving ability part The
driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test
your examiner
will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving.
Your general driving ability During
your test the examiner will give you directions that you should follow. You ll
drive in various road and traffic conditions. You should drive in the way
your instructor
has trained you.
It should include: normal
stops an
angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle) a
hill start You
might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
Reversing your vehicle safely You ll
have to show how well you can reverse your vehicle. The examiner will ask you
to do one of the following exercises: reversing
around a corner turning
in the road reverse
parking - either into a parking bay, or parallel parking at the side of
the road
Independent driving section Your
driving test will include around 10 minutes of independent driving. It s designed
to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions on your own.
If you make mistakes Carry
on if you make a mistake, because if it s not a serious mistake it might
not affect
your result. Your
examiner will stop your test if they think your driving is a danger to
other road
users.
Taking someone with you Your
examiner will ask if you want your instructor, or another person, to: sit
in the back of your car during your driving test be
with you after the test for the result and feedback This
person will usually be your driving instructor, but it could also be a
relative or
friend. They
must be over 16 and can t take any part in the test.
The examiner s supervisor The
examiner s supervisor may come along as well. They will be watching the examiner s
performance, not yours. The supervisor won t have any say in how you re
tested or in your result.

Drive On !

It
involves only six hours training with no test at the end. There are six
modules; town
driving, all-weather driving, out of town driving and rural roads, night
driving, dual
carriageways and motorways. Once all six modules have been completed, your training
form is sent to the Pass Plus Unit at the D.S.A. and you will receive a Certificate
of Completion.

Many
people have never driven at night! If all you've done is a school run or
trips to
the local supermarket, you probably won't be able to drive safely at
night, in poor
visibility on major roads or motorways. I can teach you to do this type of driving
safely.

If
you've driven for years but haven't needed to, or have avoided using
motorways, the
prospect of motorway driving can be very worrying. Are you concerned about how
to join or leave a motorway? A few hours of professional motorway tuition
will give
you the high degree of competence you need to drive safely.

This is ideal if you passed your test several years ago and haven't driven
much since.
You may change your job and find that your new employer needs you to be mobile.
This course will quickly bring back your confidence. If
any part of driving worries you, I can train you to be competent and
confident in that
particular area. Please don't be one of the many drivers who hope they'll
never have
to reverse into a space between two vehicles again!
